Daintree Dreaming - Traditional Aboriginal Fishing

Overview

Start that day meeting your personal driver-guide at your accommodation. Travelling in a private vehicle, enjoy the scenic Great Barrier Reef Drive north past Port Douglas to Cooya Beach (Kuyu Kuyu). Here you will meet a Kubirri Warra clan member and join them on a shared 2.5 hour coastal walk, learning fishing and gathering techniques passed down from their ancestors that they still use today to source food for their families. Through mangrove and low-tide beach environments, discover how the local Aboriginal people lived off the land here.

After the walk, we then make our way to Mossman Gorge Centre for a delicious lunch infused with local flavours. Take time to peruse the art gallery and souvenir shop here before a traditional smoking ceremony conducted to welcome you to Aboriginal land. Take the shuttle bus into the ancient rainforest of Mossman Gorge itself where your experienced guide will teach you about the special relationship between the rainforest here and the local Kuku Yalanji people as you walk along paths and elevated walkways.

Once back at the centre, return to the private vehicle for your journey back to your accommodation.
