3 Day Bungle Bungle Northern & Southern Gorge

  • 3 days
  • Departs 9:00am

Discover the iconic Bungle Bungles Northern and Southern Gorges with a scenic flight and guided day tour with traditional owner Bec Sampi. Stay in the Luxury Wilderness lodge for 2 nights with meals provided.

A geomorphic phenomenon, the Bungle Bungle Ranges can be found in the world heritage-listed Purnululu National Park, about 300km south of Kununurra in the northwest of Australia. 20 million years of weathering have produced these spectacular orange and grey banded, bee-hive shaped towers. The complex maze found within towers is heightened by the twisting, narrow and sheer-sided gorges lined with lush green Livonia palms. The towers, along with the soaring and jagged cliffs that rise up to 250 metres above, are cut by seasonal and secret waterfalls and pools…

We could talk all day and tell you all about it, but this natural beauty really is something that should be seen (and experienced) for yourself.

What to Expect

What to Expect

Day 1 Departing Kununurra we head south over Lake Kununurra, the Packsaddle Irrigation area, and the upper Ord River on to Lake Argyle, flying over some of our vast cattle stations, the Osmond Ranges, and onto the imposing sight of Bungle Bungle Range. The orange and black ribbons across the beehive-like mounds, are clearly visible as you approach from the north. We sweep further over the range and its hidden world of gorges and billabongs is revealed to further showcase Picanniny Gorge and the western escarpment, before setting course for the Argyle Diamond Mine; the birthplace of the spectacular Argyle pink diamond. The western shoreline of Lake Argyle and the Carr Boyd Ranges lead us back to Kununurra where, as a special bonus, we over-fly the Lower Ord, Ivanhoe Crossing and the northern irrigated farmlands. This is a flight you will never forget!

On landing jump in the 4WD and your guide will drive you to the beginning of the walking trail where you commence on a bush tucker and bush medicine tour on your way to Cathedral Gorge. Your Kingfisher guide will sing beautiful songs of the gorges, that are 1000s of years old. Lunch is provided in the gorge, then head on to the look out, learning about the cultural and geological history of the area. Ice cold refreshments are provided on your return to the airstrip to wrap up the tour.

Your accommodation will be the bush luxury Wilderness Lodge with food and beverages provided.

Day 2 In the Bungle Bungle Ranges includes trekking into the spectacular Echidna Chasm and Mini Palms walking trail where you will be astounded by your surroundings, and the incredible dreaming stories before heading to the look out where you can see the Echidna Cave. Enjoy sunset and your last night in the pristine environment of the Wilderness lodge.

Day 3 At 10:00am board your scenic flight back into Kununurra where you will fly over the Argyle Diamond Mine with an option of landing and joining the ground tour of the mine with Traditional Owner Ted Hall, or continue on the flight to the Carr Boyd Ranges, Ord Stage 2, overfly Ivanhoe Crossing, before landing in Kununurra.

Kingfisher Tours embraces the adventure of the Kimberley region with our luxurious and exciting tour experiences from the sub-Saharan landscapes of the Bungle Bungle Range to the sub-tropical oasis’ found between grand gorges in hues of red and orange, right out to the exquisite turquoise waters of the Northern Kimberley coast. With Kingfisher Tours, you have the opportunity to experience the uncommon beauty of these landscapes by Air, Land and Sea on our plane, 4WD and boat tours.

Kingfisher Tours have been operating for 8 years in the Kimberley and we have created unique products that allow our guests to submerge themselves in the landscape, soaking in the ancient knowledge of Kingfisher’s custodian guides who share the rich and diverse history of the Kimberley Region; the stories of the land and the Dreamtime are experiences that are not forgotten.

On our ground tours, you are welcomed to this country the Kimberley way with our local Aboriginal guides who make you known to the ancestors of the land, the traditional welcome to country, before enjoying some billy tea and freshly made damper.  Our ground tours boast local produce and some bush tucker for lunches, with local beers from Spinifex Beer (try the lemon myrtle beer!) or our fresh Mango jams and chutney’s from the local farms. Your guides will also point out local bush tucker and medicinal flora in the area.  For those of our guests indulging in our overnight packages, your accommodation will be in APT’s luxury wilderness lodges in the Bungles and on the North Coast, and we have a stunning private Lodge 20km from Kununurra or partnerships with hotel accommodation for those guests who wish to stay within the township.

Kingfisher tours are very conscious of our pristine wilderness that we live and tour in. As such we have introduced a number of initiatives to minimise the single-use plastic in the business and continue to encourage other tour operators, our partners in particular to do the same. We also aim to employ local staff from tour guides to our reservation team, so our guests will be received by a local Kimberley resident.  Our partner in the air in Kununurra is Helicopter Logistics, but don’t be confused by the name as this ex-military outfit provide Kingfisher Tours with an array of fantastic planes. Safety is paramount for both Kingfisher Tours and Helicopter Logistics and during the 15 years since the establishment of Helicopter Logistics, they have achieved a 100% safety record! Our planes are the Kodiak, a new high winged, turbo, airconditioned American touring plane, the G8 Airvan, again high winged with large windows, another touring plane, and for quick transfers between locations, we have a new Cessna 210 which is small, fast and comfortable with high wings. All of the planes have window seats only so every guest has a magnificent view!
